In the October 15 2009 issue of “Bottom Line and Personal”, Loral Langemeier of www.liveoutloud.com has a good article about starting a new business to bring in an extra $500 to $1000 per month.
We heartily agree!
One of the key part of her article is worth discussion here. That is, “Businesses to Avoid.” She lists three items.
- Retail Stores — Why? Inventory costs, employee hassles, longer time to profit, large capital (money) outlay required.
- Franchises — Huge up front costs means long time to real profits.
- “New Idea” business — “It takes lots of time and marketing dollars to convince consumers to spend their money on something that they’ve never spent it on before. The failure rate for such businesss is very high. More than 485, 000 applications for US patents were filed in 2008 — only a few of these will be successful. It is better to offer a service that people already understand.”
We could not agree MORE. In the homebased business industry, there are tons of new products that come out almost weekly. Superfoods, energy drinks, marketing systems, etc. Wild almost unbelievable stories of super benefits yet the businesses rarely last longer than 6 to 12 months, if that. Why? Because it is HARD to SELL new products that people don’t already use. Especially in this lousy economy.
